Oware Heist is a solo stealth-strategy game that reimagines the traditional Akan-Ashanti board game Oware as a nighttime heist. Players sow seeds pit by pit around a shared board, timing each move to land exactly on a stash target—but every move raises a suspicion meter, and a careless sow (emptying a pit or overloading one) draws the guard's attention faster. The goal is to stash every seed before suspicion hits 100 and the player is caught. The game is framed as a village folktale: an Azmari—the Ethiopian minstrel-storyteller tradition, akin to a griot—narrates the run in real time, reacting to close calls, successful stashes, wins, and losses with in-character commentary, while a Night Guard visibly reacts when suspicion spikes. Three difficulty tiers (Quiet night, Light patrol, and Full watch) scale the board size, suspicion rate, and stash target, with each level unlocking the next on completion. The motivation behind the project was to take a genuinely old, skill-based African board game mechanic and give it a fresh narrative frame, rather than building a generic arcade game with African-styled art layered on top. The build process involved iterating entirely inside Dala Studio: starting from the bare sowing/capture mechanic, layering in the suspicion system, screens and copy, and finally juice—animation, sound, and narrator dialogue—while testing each stage before adding the next to keep the core loop stable.
